Independent Novels - Final Project

Dave Pelzer, lived in Daly City, California. As a child he was beat and starved. Luckily he has survived and wrote a story about his life in a "madhouse", also he is now recognized as The Outstanding Young People Award.

2. Name and describe the main character(s). Are they static or dynamic? What motivates them? (A static character does not change, a dynamic character changes as a result of his or her experiences)
The main characters name is Dave Pelzer, he is a dynamic character because he got beat and changed his perspective on life to never give up.
3. What is the novel's setting? Why, in your opinion, did the author choose this setting for this novel?
The novel setting was the basement/garage. I think the author pick this setting for the novel because its where the author spent most is time. He would sit in the basement/garage when he was told too or to sleep.

4-. Describe some of the main events. Where in your novel does the climax take place?
Some of the main events in the novel were when the mother tried to make 'the boy' eat pooh, or when she tried to starve him for two weeks. The climax in the story, one was the first chapter because it talks about how the boy got away and then the rest of the story talks about how it lead up to that.


1. What are the scenes, incidents or moments which you remember most vividly?
The most vivid moment in the story for me is when the mother stabs 'the boy' by accident.
2. Can you identify any important theme or idea with which the novel deals? Do the problems or issues get resolved or are they simply explored?
I find that the story never really says weather or not the mothers still is the way she is. But the problem with 'the boy' getting abused defiantly got solved.
3. Did you learn anything from the story that you did not know before? Explain (this could be facts or simply seeing something from a different perspective?)
i learned that you should never give up and never give in. One example from the story would be when the mother was bullying 'the boy' and made sure not to cry because if he did it gave her the satisfaction.
4. Does the novel interest you, irritate you or both? Explain.
This story really did interest me. The more I read, it made it harder to put down. I found this story interesting because is wasn't like any story I read before, I usually read about people falling in love. This book was the first book I read that was a true story, which made it more interesting know that this isn't just something being made up.


5. If you could be any character in the novel, who would you be? Why that character?
If I could be one character in the novel I would the nurse. I would be the nurse because she is the reason Dave isn't dead today.
6. Would you like to read more books from the same author? Why?
I would love to read another story from this author because all the summary's I've read about his other stories seem touching.
7. Explain why the novel did or did not end the way you had hoped it would.
The story ended the way I hoped, but I also knew what was going to happen at the end because the end was also the beginning chapter.
8. Can you imagine yourself reading the novel again in 10 years? Would you suggest it to a friend? Explain.
Yes, I could see myself reading this story again in the future. Also I would suggest this story to a friend because I would think would have the opinion on the book as I did.

Trip to China

The story I just read is " East " it is about eight students who pay to go on a trip to China and before they go they get there hair dresser to teach them some Chinese because she was born in China. When they go to China they meet a Chinese women, and they think she is the nicest lady they have ever met. When they get home they talk about how a month wasn't long even and that now they can hardly remember what happened because everything is getting fuzzy around the edges. but overall was a great experience. The main part is make everything a memory and let the moment last.

writing a summary

summarizing a piece of text is an important skill, In order to summarize, a reader needs to be able to separate the main idea of a text from supporting details. A good summary includes the most important information and eliminates " information overload. "

New York Will Be Coming To Town

  


On December of 2010 New Yorkers started putting up there Christmas trees and instead of  putting up an original Christmas tree they started a in trend of putting your Christmas tree upside down. You might think how does it stand up , what it is , is a pole right threw the center of the tree for support and a board at the bottom so it can stand up .

   Its Christmas time and everyone is starting to put up there Christmas trees. But in New York , New yorkers are putting up there trees in style , by putting them upside down. They look just like a regular Christmas tree but its upside down .

  You might think its crazy now but in one year from now the trend will be in Canada , and You'll problay have an upside down Christmas tree in your living room. For now enjoy the worlds old fashion tree and Merry Christmas .

I didn't enjoy reading the novel because I didn't see a point to it and also I didn't find it intersating , the only part I really liked was chapter 9 because is was kinda exciting with a death in it. After reading the story I was left with one more thing to do and that is to write two of my own questions which is chapter six.

Opinion Essay

Q : Are blogs helpful in English class ?

T : Blogs are helpful in English class.

1. Blogs are helpful because you don't have to write by hand . (convenience)
2. Blogs are helpful because they spell check , date and put your work in order . (editing and organising functions)
3. Blogs are helpful because they save trees. (environment)

In my opinion, blogs are very helpful in English class. Compared to the old way of doing school work, blogs are much more convenient. They have many handy editing and organising functions. Finally, if all students used blogs the environment would be much better off. These are all reasons why I feel blogs are great in English class.

Blogs are helpful because you don't have to write by hand. Often after taking notes all day, my hand would get sore. Typing is much easier to do and I find I can get more work done. Also it's easier because i don't have to look everywhere for a pen or pencil when i loose them.

Blogs are helpful because they spell check , date and put your work in order. Sometimes I forget to date my work and then the teacher never knows when I finished my assignment, or I forget to spell check so I have tons of mistakes , which is not the best for my mark. Lastly there helpful because they put everything in order instead of having stuff everywhere in my books.

Blogs are helpful because they save trees. Saving the environment is really important these days so why not just a blog where youo dont have to print and waste paper or write and waste paper , its not like your teacher is going to keep your work forever and niether are you .

I think part time jobs in high school are a good idea because you need to get a job sometime in your life so why not start when your a kid and want to buy tones of things. Examples of why part time jobs in high school are good are , you learn responsibility , they give you a taste of what you'll be doing in life and they give you spending money . These are all the reasons why i think part time job are a good idea when your in high school.

  Part time jobs in high school are a good idea because your parents aren't always going to pay for you. So if you get a job you don't have to ask the usual question " mom ,can I have money ? " , instead you can have your own money and buy what ever you want .

If you don't get a part time job in high school chances are you wont know how getting paid and getting hired works ,but if you do get a part time job you also get more chances with other jobs because they know your experienced.

Short Story (Positive/Negative Character Traits)

    
    " OLLLIIIVVEERR !! , mom and dad need to talk to you " Ruby shouted with a sneaky tone of voice . Oliver came thumping down the stairs like a bear just waking up from hibernating , " Yes my lovely father and mother " he replied sarcastically . " Your father and I are going to see your aunt Linda for the night and well were gone we need you to watch your sister " , " But .. " Oliver tried to answer , " No buts about it we need you to do this for us and if you are a good babysitter we'll give you fifty dollars towards that new phone you want " Oliver's mother interrupted . Their mother and father walked into the kitchen.
" You have to do everything I tell you do Ruby , alright ? " Oliver commanded , " Actually no , I'll do what I want to do and you can just watch me " Ruby commanding back . As their parents returned back in , Ruby turned around , smiled and said sweetly " Mommy , daddy don't worry I'll do everything Olly tells me to do " she then turn and looked at Oliver with a devious look on her face and quickly looked back over at her parents and batted her eye lashes.

 
   After three hours of no sound not even a pin drop , out of nowhere Oliver heard a " BOOM , CRASH , BANG ! " from upstairs , Oliver bolted up the stairs thinking Ruby had hurt herself , but conveniently Ruby was fine , she had just been trying build a fort with all of Oliver's stuff. " What are doing with my STUFF ?! " Oliver shouted , " What ? , it's not like i broke anything important " Ruby said rudely , " Well i guess you didn't ....   EXCEPT MY XBOX ! " Oliver was so mad he didn't know what to do so he called his father to tell him about the whole thing , when Oliver was done talking , his dad asked to speak with Ruby , when Ruby got on the phone she said sweetly well pretending to cry " Daddy I'm so sorry i didn't mean to I wanted to build something where Olly and I could play " after that her father had told her it was fine and hung up.
" Ruby , I trusted you to be better than this " Oliver said disappointingly , " Olly I'm actually sorry it's just you never pay attention to me anymore " Ruby replied sadly , " Really , well I'll start to pay attention to you , but I do like our little fights like brothers and sisters have " Oliver happily said.

   After everything had been said the two of them built a fort , played in it and fell asleep. When there parents got home they were surprised to see the two together for once , so their mother lightly tapped Oliver's shoulder to ask how the night had been , Oliver replied " It was great I'll gladly babysit for Ruby anytime " his mother was in shock from the sentence he just said and she looked at him and shockingly said " Instead of me giving you the fifty do .. " Oliver interrupted " If I'm not getting paid because it was a good night then I'll never babysit again " Oliver's mother laugh and went on with what she was trying to say " As I was saying , since it was such a good night , I'm not going to pay you because instead I'll just buy you the new phone you want " Oliver's face lite up with excitement and he walked over to his sister , picked her up and put her in to bed , he kissed her so sweetly and gentle so she wouldn't awake and whispered " I love you " .

My Experience

   My expiernce has been great taking english , I enjoy the subject , I'd have to say its one of my favourite subjects in school besides art class , but one of my least favourite subjects is math . I personally think english is marked the same as other subjects are marked , experiences from my lifes to explain my answers would be , when a teacher gives you a four square to show you what you should be doing and what you shouldn't being , I used to get those in every subject and they all basically said the same thing but were just talking more about the specific subject.

   In my preivous english class I achieved learning how to summarize better , I was satisfied with performance , I believe i achieved this becuase before i got taught better I was mainly retelling the story but without the ending , when my pervious teacher showed me how to summarize i was pretty good at it i was just using beggining, middle and end and make them one , I'd have to say that was one of the most enjoyables things i did in that class because I felt like I improved something i was terrible at which means i did something right.

   This year two of my mine inentions are two get better at public speaking and go above and beyond , some things to help me do this would be have the guts to just stand up infront of the class and speak also instead of doing what the instructions are , I'll do alittle more than im suposse to, one issue though with public speaking is I'm scared everyone is going to laugh at me if i mess up a word , I would like it if my teacher just told me i have to go up infront of the class before if I don't do it by myself by the end of the year , but I think it would be better if my tacher atleast waited till the middle of the semester to tell me to speak infron of the class. After high school I'd like to go to college or universaty to be a lawyer.

   Some interesting things about me is before I die I'd like to make a jello pool and swim in it , I have two kitties their names are Buddy and Pal , one of my hobbies are to write music and one of my favourite things to do is draw. Some of my friends in class are Chelesa , Sonia , Mark , Max , Trevin , their people I like to be around because they make laugh and have fun but they keep me stable in class . My friends and I like two go to the movies are walk around town. From my point of view my friends do both , some days I'm really chatty with them and get nothing done , but most days I talk with them but also get all my work done or get more then supossed to be done.

   If I were to describe my personality I would say im bubbly , funny , and energetic , one example of how my personality changes is if I'm sad/mad I get quite and concentraiting. I dont think my teacher needs to know anything else but your going to problay want me sad or mad all the time.

connection 1-  I can connect with the quote '' I never really took the time to understand how her days work '' , i can connect with that because i know my brother never really knew how my days worked as i didn't know how his worked .

Courage

One day long ago i learn how to use courage . The day i learn about courage was about three weeks ago on the first day of grade nine. I had no friends in my classes, so I knew I needed to walk into my class and make at least one friend. So as I walk into the classroom I got all my courage and talked to someone and to this day shes still my friend.

The water slide is a popular form of entertainment. Also all ages of people climb up and slide down the slide all day. As they go down they go down on a long , bright blue plastic tube. Younger people have no fear , they lay back , go for speed , shoot out into the pool. While others are unsure and just sit back then desend slowly. Everyone goes down with enthusiasm again and have the sensation of falling quickly but slowly.

We were preparing for our play's second performance, as the dressing room was in a state. In the dressing room costume racks and makeup trays were scattered about the room. While helpers were dressing and applying makeup on cast members nearly everyone was nervous. Then when the male and female leads were getting ready the female lead's wig wouldn't stay on and the male lead's suspenders would not cooperate. We wondered if the production would ever come together.

Jackie's dad has been a truck driver for twenty years, but he's taking a year off to be with Jackie.  Jackie's dad now works full-time at home watching Jackie.  Jackie and her dad cook and clean while they're home. But when they're all done their work they have fun.  Jackie enjoys being with her dad every day.

1) What is your opinion of The Twilight Zone? Explain why this either would or would not be a good graphic novel to use for other grade nine classes.
My opinion on the " twilight zone " is and an interesating story how things happen for a reason , and not everything stays the same. I think this would be a greart graphic novel for other grade nine student to read because it teaches you about how if you leave your old life behind and you come back later in life its not always going to be the same.

2) How is reading a graphic novel different than reading a short story? What strategies do you have to use as a reader in order to understand it fully? (Make a list)
Reading a graphic novel is different than reading a short story because you see the pictures instead of having to pictureing in your head. Stragies I have are one life always changes , two everthing happens for a reason and final always live life to the fullest.
